:iconstarplz:  Well, hello again ladies and gents!  I’m sure most of you will race down to the Winner Announcement Section before reading this, but hopefully you’ll come back up, because I’d just like to say a few words!
First of all, it’s been an absolute pleasure running this tournament.   Of course we had a few ups and downs, a little bit of drama, and there’s always a certain amount of stress when you’re dealing with things like deadlines and personal talent and the like.  Still, we got through that, and I’d like that think that everyone met at least a few interesting people, made a new friend or two, found some new watchers, practiced their skills and drew things they’d never tried before, and got to explore their nerdy side. ^^  I know I did all of the above and more!
As our little ‘Summer Event’ finally comes to a close in the new year, let me say a bit ‘Thank You’ for making my idea for a tournament more enjoyable than I ever dreamed when the idea came to me back in April. And I hope to stay in touch, even after TOT comes to a close.  Live long and prosper, Star-Trekking!
Mids :iconstarplz:

:iconstarplz: Winner Announcement & a Word from the Judges :iconstarplz:
Hello!  Mids again.  Before you get to the results, I just want to stress what a truly difficult process this was for all the judges involved.  (Okay, there were only 3 of us, but still!)  I didn’t realize when I decided to make the final a battle royale how many truly exceptional artists I was going to have, or how many entries would just blow me away.  So I already made it tough on myself, and having more than the original 7 to look through was even worse!
In the end, we decided to make a list of categories, then grade each entry and entrant on a scale of 1-5 for each.  (If you’re interested in the categories, let me know and I’ll post them. )  Even with this extensive method, the results were still extremely close—which, as you’ll see below, is part of why I decided to give the 2nd and 3rd places as well as a couple of honorable mentions.  It’s not like this was a landslide decision—we all hemmed and hawed over this for several weeks!
The difference between the winner’s total and 2nd place was .5 points.  Yeah, it was THAT CLOSE.  So don’t think that, because you didn’t win, we thought your entry sucked.  Even the entries that aren’t mentioned specifically were great—you were all great, and there was improvement in almost everyone in some way or another.   You should all be proud of yourselves.  And for heaven’s sake, don’t give up!  Join another tournament!  (Though maybe not immediately—a break is always nice. xD)
So, enough of me blathering!  You want to see the winner!

Honorable Mentions

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

First Honorable Mention goes to--  :iconjiori-seth: for the coolest original race in TOT!  It was really awesome being introduced to the Alurians, especially through your captivating and very original style.   Tichna Salem is a great character, so thank you for sharing her with all of us!

Second Honorable Mention goes to-- :iconkenshin-chan64: for the funniest entries!  I could always count on a laugh (or more!) from your comics, your character, and her interactions with everyone else.    Owat had an engaging personality, and your stories were awesome!  I really enjoyed reading them, every time.

And the Third Honorable Mention goes to-- :iconnomnomroko: for, do I really have to say it?  Pretty much the most AWESOME ART EVER. <3  Mero, you are pretty much the best artist ever, and the judges concurred that if we could all just draw like you we could die happy.  You have a beautiful, graphic style, that can alternately be funny or emotional, sometimes both.  Keep it up!

Runners Up!

:iconstarplz:
Third place goes to… :iconr0-s3: and Sibek!
Sibek was a great character that it was hard not to like.  (Maybe I’m just a sucker for scars and a messed-up head?  But who isn’t?)  You were constantly getting things in on-time (and usually about five seconds after I posted the prompts), but your quality didn’t ever seem to suffer.  The stories were great, even though as a medical officer it was hard for Sibby to play a main role.  Considering that, you did a great job anyway of thrusting him to the front.    Thanks!

Second place goes to... :iconcounselorcat: and Tantomus!
I was immediately excited when I saw that we were going to be having a Romulan in the tournament.  After all, who would have thought, right?  I mean, Klingons eventually joined with the Federation, but Romulans always seem to be the bad guys.  I wanted to see them in a different light—and Tantomus provided me that opportunity.  As a character, he wasn’t perfect, but he was fun and fragile in all the right ways.  Your action scenes were always so much fun to look at, and I have to admit that your final round had me mesmerized with its sudden dive into Tanto’s past, as well as the intensity of visiting Romulus!  Bravo good woman—and I hope you recovered from your abuse of Red Bull!

THE WINNER!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And finally, the winner of Star Trek: The Original Tournament, is…
!!!:icontrakker: and K'Rinn!!!
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!  HOW EXCITING, AMIRITE?
I have to admit, I was interested to see how someone whose gallery was mostly Sonic was going to pull off drawing Star Trek, and I was soundly put into my place.  A Caitian, who else?  And K’Rinn was an exceptional specimen in every definition of the word.  I was hooked from the beginning, with the complicated technical jargon and witty self-deprecating humor that were so much a part of her, and so fit into the Star Trek universe!  (Especially the jargon.  It sounded just legit enough to fool me, which is just like the real deal!)  I enjoyed how Trakker occasionally snuck references to later canon in, usually implying that K’Rinn invented it, which was totally cool and extremely amusing for me. X)  The progression from B&W to full-on color was also a lovely bonus.  His ability to draw technology and spacecrafts was just mind-blowing to me as well—especially in the later comics, the space scenes are just gorgeous in his strong yet minimalistic style.
You really seemed to come into your own in the last two rounds—entries which, I’d just like to say, had all the story and feel of real ST episodes.
Great job!

ST:TOT : audition round ref by Trakker -- K'rinn intro: part 01 by Trakker -- Trekkin contest P2: page 01 by Trakker
ST Conest Pt3: Cat Years pg01 by Trakker -- ST:comp: Frosty Reception PG01 by Trakker -- STOT final: PG01 by Trakker

:iconstarplz: What now? :iconstarplz:
Good question!  Now that you’ve settled (supposedly) from all of the above excitement, what’s left?
Well, the prizes, DUH!  Although most of the prizes are for the winner, several wonderful people (including myself!) also offered some art to the runners-up and all of the people from the final round!  (Wasn’t that nice of us?)  Not to mention that I also owe a couple of pieces for the banner contest!  So don’t worry about a sudden absence of TOT—there will be several pieces to come. ;)
As for the prize list below, I will be getting in touch with those who offered prizes, so look forward to something relating to that in your inbox here in a little bit.   (And by little bit, I promise I don’t mean a month this time!)  I’ll get to work on my part of those deals, so also expect something from me as far as a note!
:icontrakker:, as you and K’Rinn are our winners, you’ll also be receiving a colored picture from her tournament history, and a comic from moi as a sort of wrapping-up of the TOT storyline.  I’ll be in touch with you about those, so don’t worry. ^^

:iconstarplz:Prizes:iconstarplz:
A horde of wonderful, benevolent, kind Star Trek lovers have already agreed to donate prizes.  Isn't that nice of them?  This is a list of what you could win if you make it all the way! (I'll even be doing consolation prize pictures for the 6 runner-ups!)
:iconalmaxaquotal: A small, custom-made plushie of the winner's character. (random TRIBBLES to be handed out as the tournament goes!) (AND potential subscriptions as the tournament goes on!)
:iconr0-s3: A colored, full-body picture. (And colored half-body pictures for the runners up!)
:iconjiori-seth: A colored piece with minimal background and 2 characters, full-body or half.
:iconrachaelwrites: Art request and a journal mention.
:iconpiratepincushion: A 3 month premium membership. (and potential hand-made craft item)
:iconconceptjunkie124: Mention on The Ship's Closet Facebook page. (and potential mention in upcoming episodes.)
:icontommadeleine: Picture of some kind.
:icondr-kara: Picture commission.
:iconnomnomroko: Half-body sketch+color of a character of the winner's choice.
:iconcristina-corruptive: A Full-CG Chibi of the Winner's OC, and a colored doodle for *3* runners-up.
:icondedicatedfollower467: Small B&W sketches for each of the 7 finalists including their OC and Kirk, Spock or McCoy.  (The sketch will be on a piece of 4"x5" piece of paper, and the winner can also decide if they want it posted on DA, shipped to them, or both.)
:iconmidnight-aristocrat: Winner's Character in a finale comic, colored scene from winner's history. (also smaller character drawings for the 6 runners-up.)

:iconstarplz:  Well, I guess that’s it! ;<  Kind of sad, really.  I won’t know what to do with myself now that TOT is over!  (Well, okay, I can probably find things to do, but still.)
Again, thank you for the participation that made this tournament possible, your time, your energy, and your art. ^^   Catch you on the flip side!
Your (mostly) Fearless Leader,
Midnight

:iconstarplz : In case you want access to all of the finalist rounds, here they are for your browsing enjoyment.   I definitely recommend reading them all if you haven’t already! :iconstarplz:

Hello everyone, and hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!  Most of all, I hope that you got a lovely little gift from your Secret Santa!  ^^

Since it is the first, and art was due by today, I just want to take a check and make sure everyone got their gifts!

So--
If you haven't been informed of your gift, and you haven't seen it submitted to Star Trekking as of yet, please let me know!  I want to make sure everyone gets something.  Then I'll go through, contact people-- you know, that stuff.

Hopefully not too many people got scrooged! D:
I've already had several people contact me about being unable to finish or being slightly late, but if there's anyone else with problems.  We'll get you something, don't worry. :)

Thanks again-- hope you enjoyed :iconstar-trekking:'s first Secret Santa!

Yes, you read that correctly!  So, for some time the only event going on has been the tournament, and while that's always fun, I was thinking that maybe some other people would like something to do!

It being the holidays and all, I thought, what better way to give-- and get-- than a secret santa event?  So Star-Trekking, here's your chance to sign up for...

Photobucket

So, how do I sign up for this wonderful event, you ask?  Just comment below saying that you want to join!  I'll check and update the journal every time I have a few minutes.  The sign-up will be open from today, December 5, to December 11th, just because.  So you have six days, give or take.
Then, on the 11th, I will dip into my random number generator (a personal favorite tool) and pair people up!

Once you find out who you are making art for, you can get to work!  Still, don't post anything yet-- on December 25th (Christmas Day!) you are allowed to post the gift art into your gallery and into Star-Trekking (but make sure you put it in the appropriate folder!).

This isn't meant to be necessarily the best piece of art you've ever accomplished, but just a nice little thing to say Merry Christmas!  Sometime between the 25th and January 1st would be good to get your art up.

Everyone, as soon as you've been certified to participate by me, feel free to throw up a journal or something stating what you would like as your gift!  Don't make it too complicated, and give one or two things, so that the artist has some stuff to choose from.
Your picture should be Star Trek-related, but besides that, anything goes! (As long as it is appropriately rated and within the artists comfort zone-- this is a holiday event after all!)  Would you like Shatner/Nimoy?  Okay!  A picture of Deanna Troy hanging out with Data?  Cool!  Or maybe some original characters?  Also nifty!

So, here's a checklist for you:

Comment to this blog asking to sign up! [ ]
Get put on the list by me, solidifying your participation. [ ]
Post a journal or something stating what you would like!  (Give options!) [ ]
Wait until December 11 to receive your assignment! [ ]
Draw draw draw! [ ]
December 25 - January 1st, post your art to DA and link to the recipient! [ ]
Receive YOUR gift art! [ ]
Have a good time! [ X ]

** Rules for Participation **
1. Be kind, courteous, complimentary, etc.
2. DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT GIFT ART.  People of different artistic levels will, I assume, be participating.  Keep this in mind when signing up.  It's all random.  Just make a nice piece of art, and others will do the same.
3. Don't post your art until Dec. 25th!  And don't tell the person about it-- that's part of the surprise!
4. DO make a journal with requests!  How is someone supposed to know what you want if you don't write it somewhere?  Psychic abilities?
5. Like I said, be appropriate.  Romance is good, even some tasteful nudity (if the artist is OK with it), but nothing over-the-top please.
6. IF YOU SIGN UP, FOLLOW THROUGH.  This means that, by asking to participate, you agree that you will come up with art by January 1st.  It isn't fair to the person you were assigned if you decide to back out!  Not only is it a totally mean move, but trust me, you'll get a pretty bad rep from it.
(If, by January 1st, someone hasn't received art, please contact me.)

:iconstarplz:
I can't believe it, but yes, TOT is officially DONE.  Well, at least as far as the competitors are concerned!  Mostly it's just stuff I have to do now.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO FINISHED!

You're really great, you know that?  You've done some really great work, and you've devoted a lot of time and effort to entertaining me-- and everyone else-- with your stories and lovely art.
So thank you.

I'm feeling a little sad, so I'd just like to say that the judging of this round will be posted AFTER CHRISTMAS.
So enjoy your holidays, and take a breather. :)

I'm gonna miss this. ;<  But I guess I'll save the major nostalgia until everything is totally said and done.
Best,
Mids
:iconstarplz:

A few reminders:
Read through the blog carefully so that you don’t miss anything!  I realize a lot of it is taken from previous blogs, but you wouldn’t believe how many people said they didn’t know when the last round ended!  That shouldn’t happen, and I don’t want it to happen, so make sure you readreadread!  And if something is NOT clear to you, let me know, please!  I’m here as a tool—use me!

:iconstarplz: This is, for all intents and purposes, the final round of the tournament!  It's done in a battle-royale style, which means that instead of one opponent everyone just turns in an entry and the judges (poor saps) decide on a winner.
Entries aren't required to be finished, but obviously your chances of winning are INFINITELY higher if you have a finished entry.
Just to keep in mind. :iconstarplz:

Updates:
11/2/10: Round Four Blog is posted.
11/3/10: Round Four officially begins.
11/23/10: One (1) week (and change) extension announced.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

DEADLINE
The round will be given five *6-ish* weeks to finish.

The round officially starts November 3rd, and will go until midnight on December 18th, Eastern Standard Time. (Or before I check sometime on the 19th.)

THIS IS THE FINAL EXTENSION!  I want to wrap this up before Christmas.  This tournament already reminds me of Gilligan's Island-- you know, a three-hour-tour turned life-on-an-island?  So yes!  The 18th!  Mark it!

Communications with the Group Leader are still down, so for people who are wondering, simply continue to submit your entries into the 2010 Tournament folder. If there is a problem submitting and you want to be sure, send me a link to your entry in a note. You'll be good then fo sho. :)

______________________________________________________________________

Rules of the Round
*I know a lot of people struggled last time, and that will only intensify as you try to juggle life, work/school, and art.  KEEP THIS IN MIND.  Five weeks may seem like a long time, but it’s easy to keep shoving your entry aside until you realize you have only a few days left.

:iconstarplz: This is the final round!.  Your entry can be as long or as short as you want, finished or unfinished, but keep in mind that you’re trying to win! You're trying to impress the judges, and THIS judge is impressed by a completed storyline, interesting characters, and obvious thought that’s gone into your piece. (Important now more than ever!) ^^

:iconstarplz: It is REQUIRED that all entrants include their Original Series mentor in each entry at least once.  They don't have to play an integral part of the storyline, but we have to see them somewhere.
(As this is the final round, and things are a little different, you're now free to include ANY of the Original Series cast, or all of them!  Your personal mentor must still make an appearance, however.)

The Secondary Command Officers don't need to be included-- they are completely optional. Including your teammates is ALSO OPTIONAL.  It isn't required to interact with them at all-- it would just be nice. :)  (Like above, you've now got access to all Secondary Command Officers and all of the remaining competitors' characters.  Including them isn't required, but I would recommend at least a few appearances.)

:iconstarplz: Your entry must be in ART/COMIC FORM.  No written entries will be accepted!  Consider this when planning ahead!  I'm sure you've got the idea by now, but you never know.

:iconstarplz: Follow the prompt.  It will not be written in stone, but there will be certain goals to accomplish/things you have to put in the story, so make sure you've got all your details straight before you start drawing!  (As always, note me if you are confused in ANY WAY.  This will be the fastest way to ensure I get to your question in a timely manner.  I stalk DA ALL. THE. TIME.)

:iconstarplz: Your entry must be at least 1 page long.  (Duh.)  Longer is probably better, but hey, if you think you can get everything down in one, I won't complain.  There's no need for a 20-page full-CG entry, though-- this isn't a graphic novel, just a tournament.

:iconstarplz: All other rules apply-- be nice, courteous, and helpful.  No whining, complaining, or flaming other competitors.  Or anyone for that matter.  It's not nice!

Etc.

Prize donations are STILL BEING ACCEPTED! 8D  It's never too late to give a little something to the winner-- or even the runner's up!  If you're interested in adding to the prize pot, note me with the details of what you're willing to give. :)
Thank you in advance. =D

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The General Setting of the Tournament:

Your character, through intelligence, compassion, wit, species, or pure dumb luck, has been chosen for a special mission.
They've been contacted by their superiors at Starfleet Academy and told that they are part of a program that is designed to push certain, special Cadets to the limit, and to put them on a fast-track through their careers.

They are VERY LUCKY.

They are given a packet with their ships assignment, and before they know it they are being shuttled out into space, the envious glances of their fellow students receding in the distance, and their new ship comes into view.

Through some twist of luck, they have suddenly found themselves promoted to the rank of 'Ensign', and serving aboard a ship with one of the members of the U.S.S. Enterprise, a ship all of them have heard about as the Flagship of the Federation.

One of them may even Captain a ship of their very own.

What they make of themselves from this point on is their own choice.

:iconstarplz: The Prompts :iconstarplz:

:iconstarplz:

Six months of intense training and space experience, not to mention recent excellent performance in the line of duty, have given your character the title of Commander.  It hasn't been easy, but your character is an extremely promising member of Starfleet, and the brass are eyeing them for possible Captaincy positions.
Suddenly, your Captain receives the order to rendezvous back at Earth, and everyone left in the program is suddenly serving aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.
You've made it this far...
Can you take it all the way?

:iconstarplz: So.  You've made it to the finale.  Congratulations!  Things are going to work a little differently here.  Once again you don't have any real opponent.  Your job?  Just to make your entry stand out from the rest of the finalists. Everything you do should contribute to your story.  Kill people, maim people, whatever you want.  Just realize you have nothing to prove, except that your character is number one.
That being said, DON'T kill off any of the Original Series members.  Feel free to seriously injure them, if you must, but no killing!  This isn't an alternate reality or anything.

All finalists, mentors, and secondary officers have been re-grouped and are currently serving aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.  (If you want to include the switch and re-assignment, that's totally up to you.)
The point is your character is now aboard the Enterprise, and Kirk is once again at the helm of his own ship, while the other mentors resume their previous positions.:iconstarplz:

The Prompt:

Inter-Galactic War.

Yup.  That's it.
I'm not giving you any sort of intricate plot this time;
I want to see what you can do.
Take what you know.  Take what you've learned.  Take the people you've met and the stories you've built.

And come up with something EPIC.
(The prompt can play as big or as small a role in your story as you see fit.  Just include it.)

As always, if you have any questions about the plot, or you have an idea and you’re not sure if it will work, send me a note!  I’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Don't forget that the star of the show should be your own character, doing whatever they must to help the situation.  Your entry doesn't have to match up with anyone else's at all-- each and every one of you has your own canon. :)

Now have at it my little dumplings!

:iconstarplz:

I'd recommend Memory Alpha for anyone who wanted to know more about Star Trek technicalities, the Original Series characters, or almost anything really.  It's really very complete.  :)

:iconstarplz:
Hello again friends!  Did you enjoy your time away? :)  I certainly hope so!  My judges and I have finally finished judging, because even though there were only a few rounds to judge, it was still pretty difficult!

You can find the results below.  Congratulations to everyone who made it through, and to everyone who unfortunately didn't, you did a GREAT job anyway, I want you to know that.

Stay tuned for news about Round Four, which should be coming up soon, provided I figure out exactly what I want to do with it.  Either way, it won't be long!
Ta ta for now,

A few reminders:
Read through the blog carefully so that you don’t miss anything!  I realize a lot of it is taken from previous blogs, but you wouldn’t believe how many people said they didn’t know when the last round ended!  That shouldn’t happen, and I don’t want it to happen, so make sure you readreadread!  And if something is NOT clear to you, let me know, please!  I’m here as a tool—use me!

Actual Prompts will be posted probably in (my) evening on Monday, and the actual round won’t start until Tuesday.  You will have FIVE WEEKS to finish!  So don’t laze around!  Take time for school, but don’t put it off!

If you feel you should still be in the tournament, but your character’s name ISN’T included in the list below, message me!  I may have missed your entry, missed the end of your entry, or anything else.  Do so promptly, however, as this offer will be closed after the first week of the round.

*chat.deviantart.com/chat/StarT… Chat Room Added!*
*iScribble Chat Added!  Message :iconnomnomroko: for more details if you are part of the tournament and would like to join!*

Round 3 time my little chickadees.  Aren’t you EXCITED?

:iconstarplz: Because 3 ships have un-even numbers of remaining participants, here’s what I’ll be doing.  2 Contestants will be paired up from different ships in one of the prompts, and the one leftover person gets a free pass (as long as they turn in a COMPLETED entry).  I’ll be sending messages to these three participants, so don’t worry, you’ll know who you are.

Updates:
9/12/10: Blog for Round 3 is posted.
9/13/10: Prompts for Round 3 will be posted.
9/14/10: Round 3 officially starts.
10/20/10: THE ROUND IS OVER. BWUAHAHA.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

DEADLINE
Each round will be given *5* weeks to finish.

The round officially starts September 14th, and will go until midnight on October 19th, Eastern Standard Time. (Basically it has to be in before I wake up and look on the 20th.)

Communications with the Group Leader are still down, so for people who are wondering, simply continue to submit your entries into the 2010 Tournament folder.  I'm going to start moving Round 1 and 2 entries from that folder into the Auditions folder (hopefully), just to give some semblance of order.

THIS IS AN ELIMINATION ROUND.  When you have a chance, work!  I want to see some good stuff here. *

:iconstarplz: THIS IS AN ELIMINATION ROUND.  Your entry can be as long or as short as you want, finished or unfinished, but keep in mind that you’re working against someone now.  If you want to stay, you’ll impress the judges!  And THIS judge is impressed by a completed storyline, interesting characters, and obvious thought that’s gone into your piece. ^^

:iconstarplz: It is REQUIRED that all entrants include their Original Series mentor in each entry at least once.  They don't have to play an integral part of the storyline, but we have to see them somewhere.

The Secondary Command Officers don't need to be included-- they are completely optional. Including your teammates is ALSO OPTIONAL.  It isn't required to interact with them at all-- it would just be nice. :)

:iconstarplz: HEY YOU GAIS.  As if there wasn't enough for you to do, I was bored and thought of an idea.

Star Trek: The Original Tournament Banner Contest! 8D
It's just a stupid little contest I came up with to fill in any boredom anybody might have.  (Y'know, in between rounds, art trades, fanart, real life, etc.)
Basically you design a banner for ST:TOT, send me a link or post a link on my page, and I'll choose my favorite to post in the blog for the Tournament Finale. :)
It can be plain text with fancy stuff done to it, it can include characters... basically anything goes.

This is open until the end of... I dunno, hit me up whenever. xD. :)  So if you've got nothing better to do, have at it!
(Oh, right, and I'll also take a free comission from the winner for some sort of *relatively* simple piece.  As if interwebz fame wasn't enough.)

OPPONENTS AND WINNERS!

Team 1: Lor’n vs. Sibek -- Sibek :iconr0-s3:
Team 2: Hwin vs. T’Nala -- T'Nala :iconminervagem:
Team 3: Owat vs. Farmyne -- Owat :iconkenshin-chan64:
Team 4: Kiram vs. Michael -- Kiram :iconblackhatpirate:
Team 5: Salen vs. Sinka – T’Vean vs. Ta-En -- Sinka :iconsinisterlysweet: and T'Vean :iconnomnomroko:
Team 6: Tantomus vs. Andrew -- Tantomus :iconcounselorcat:
Team 7: Salem vs. T’Av -- Tischna :iconjiori-seth:
Random: K’Rinn vs. Ma’Ris -- K'Rinn :icontrakker:

So the winners of the round are: Sibek, T'Nala, Owat, Kiram, Sinka, T'Vean, Tantomus, Tischna, and K'Rinn.
Go congratulate them! ;)
If you would like to know how you did, would like a critique, etc, or like to know why the votes went one way or another, please feel free to note me!  It was difficult in almost every case, really.

:iconstarplz:

The mission moves into it’s fourth month, and your character is really becoming a natural.  The program has really given them an edge that they never would have gotten at the academy, and recently they’ve received a promotion due to the latest events—your character is now a Lieutenant Commander.
A lot of good friends have been lost along the way, but you’re still going strong.
Can you rise to the challenge?

:iconstarplz: (Very Important Note: Although your character has an ‘opponent’ for this round, the goal is NOT for them to beat up their fellow crewmembers!  Each set of characters will be given a specific task or goal, and the artist who portrays this most intriguingly will be named the winner of the round.  With this in mind, if you want to up the drama, you CAN kill off your opponent.  Just know that isn’t really the point in this tournament.  But if it adds to your story, go for it.  I like a little intensity.  Make sure not to kill/permanently cripple your OWN character, though!):iconstarplz:

The Prompts:

Gender Bend – I decided not to make this a requirement, but there’s been an interesting thing going around about changing the gender of your character, and I’d like to see if anyone can incorporate this into their entry.   Like I said it isn’t a must, but you’ll earn extra ‘brownie points’, if you will.  It does NOT, in any way, guarantee your win, and conversely NOT doing it does not doom you to lose.  It’s simply an idea to consider, if maybe you’re looking for something interesting to happen.
(Including this could be as simple as your character daydreaming that they are the opposite gender, or as complicated as having your entire storyline revolve around it.  Have fun with it, but don’t stress about it. ^^)

Team One: The U.S.S. Vernon receives a distress call from a ship whose warp has crashed, and they answer to find one being alive.  However, the being is telepathic, and slowly begins to cause havoc on the ship.  How do they regain control?

Team Two: Captain Uhura is called to a xenolinguistics conference, so the U.S.S. Carroll flys her to the space station where it is being held.  However, it turns out to be a setup, and everyone is trapped in a lockdown at the station. Who is it, and how does the crew escape?

Team Three: An away team from the U.S.S. Milton explores a metallic planet, whose inhabitants are being controlled by the planet itself, which was at one time a large transport craft.  The ship is slowly succumbing to its magnetic orbit, so the planet must be shut down… somehow.  But it doesn’t seem to like the idea.

Team Four: Several crewmembers are sent in a shuttle to deliver planetary relief to a plague-stricken planet to which transporting is not an option.  When the engine fails, they crash-land on the planet, becoming infected themselves.  What do they do?

Team Five: A hostile group of beings attacks the U.S.S. Velis with unknown technology, capturing Captain Spock and several others.  While most of the crew stay to repair the ship, several decide to take the risk of infiltrating the alien’s homeworld to retrieve their Captain and comrades, and maybe even discover their secrets. Does your character go or stay? Were they taken? What do they do while there?  What part do they play?

Team Six: While going through a piece of space that gives off odd waves, the U.S.S. Charlemagne suddenly takes on a life of its own.  It’s important to get out of the area, and to take back the ship, but it’s proving to be difficult…

Team Seven: Several members of the Santa Maria suddenly begin to disappear and reappear, slipping between their present dimension and an alternate one.  At first it’s only for small periods, but then it begins to last longer, and more people are affected—even parts of the ship!  What sort of crazy alternate-dimension (not MirrorVerse) does your character go to?  What’s causing the problem, and how do they fix it?

Random Group: After picking K’Rinn up from an engineering project, Ma’Ris and the Caitian find themselves shot down on an *apparently* abandoned planet.  With no discernible help coming anytime soon, what do they do, and how do they survive?  Who shot at them, why, and is the planet REALLY uninhabited?

Talshra: Your entry should deal with the events experienced by Team Seven (see above), and be completed (beginning, middle, end) to go on to the next round.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me!  Still, I hope it isn't too difficult to figure out.  Use your imagination, and feel free to stretch the scenarios if you have an idea. Although you're free to show your teammates, don't forget that the star of the show should be your own character, doing whatever they must to help the situation.  Your entry doesn't have to match up with anyone else's at all-- each and every one of you has your own canon. :)

Now have at it my little dumplings!

Outfitting the Ranks 5

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 31, 2010, 8:27 PM
31 Aug 10
Hello everyone!
Apologies for last month’s absence. There was a convention, it was swell and now I have serious Ren Faire fever. (I need to not be planning to make four horrendously complicated projects in five months. Yet here we are.) Anyway, following my list from the third costuming blog, here’s a little discussion of dress uniforms.
Firstly, since it’s quicker to cover, the women’s dress uniform (as modelled by Areel Shaw in Season 1’s Court Martial) follows the same pattern as standard women’s uniforms. It is made of a different fabric, is somewhat longer (no panty flashing in court), and Areel has a different patch (I believe Kathy Pillsbury carries it)- it seems to be a sort of administrative patch worn by those who don’t serve on starships (I could be totally wrong on that so don’t quote me). There is also narrow gold trim around the top of her collar (similar to how the closure on McCoy’s tunic is trimmed) as befits her rank.
Here you can also see how the new fabric’s colour compares to the standard S1 velour.
Livejournal
The men’s dress uniforms are a different monster altogether. Firstly, there is no commercial pattern for these. You would need to modify the standard men’s tunic pattern: now there is a back centre seam, a front closure, a plain standing collar, a seam running down the outer side of the sleeve from the collar base to the cuff, and the tops of the sleeves (where they are attached to the body of the tunic) are more of a straight angle than curved. They are no longer hiding a zipper (I’m assuming there is an invisible zipper down the front of the dress tunics  instead but I’m not sure). I was going to do lineart for this but it turned out atrociously, I’m afraid. McCoy’s tunic is a good reference for seam placement because he has little decoration.
Livejournal (I feel obligated to point out McCoy’s nips, if you didn’t already notice them.)
The fabric, as lightly discussed here startrekuniforms.yuku.com/topi… is apparently a wool/silk blend: in other words, a good medium-weight fabric with some shine from the silk but some substance from the wool. The tunics aren’t flimsy (just terribly ill-fitted), and they are a bit stiff (especially in the sleeves). James Cawley made a very nice version out of a slightly stretchy silk blend that fit him properly and perhaps wasn’t quite as stiff. Other than that the colours are almost the same as the usual uniforms, except brighter with a sheen to them.
Livejournal
Livejournal (Kirk’s uniform used to fit him nicely.)
Lastly are the decorations. To take place of wrist rank braid is gold trim going around the collar and down the front closure, increasing in width based on rank. Kirk gets additional gold piping on the front of his sleeve gusset. Commodores get gold piping down the outer sleeve seam as well. The awards (aside from ribbons) are small embroidered triangles.
Livejournal
The triangles, configured for Kirk/Spock/McCoy/Scotty (not the ribbon; I don’t know where to find that, but it can be made) are available for sale from here: myworld.ebay.com/captainamerca… but this seller is notoriously hit-or-miss; he has a better history of shipping patches rather than custom costumes, and I only list him because I don’t know offhand where else to get these things. I would personally make the patches myself before ordering from him, but you can look him up and decide for yourself. If anyone knows who else is offering the patches I’d definitely like to know. However they are not complicated and not as extensively detailed as illustrated here. I also don’t know where to get the gold braid (although you can avoid that altogether by being a lower rank).
Livejournal (Sorry the thumbnail’s weird.)
Livejournal
(Screencaps are from Trek Core, hosted on my LJ scrapbook; illustration was provided by enterprising-bones; Christies pic is… well, it’s not mine, I don’t remember where I saved it from.)
Anyway that should about wrap it up for this time. As always, feel free to add/correct anything or suggest different features. Thank you for reading. :)
